Paraquat & Diquat Public Consultation

A note from Crop Smart CEO on the proposed changes to Paraquat & Diquat registrations

Dear Crop Smart Customers,

We’re writing to inform you about a crucial development impacting Australian agriculture: the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has released a proposed decision regarding the future of paraquat and diquat use.

We believe in supporting Australian farmers and ensuring they have access to the tools and technologies they need to succeed.

As you know, paraquat has been a reliable tool for Australian farmers for over 60 years, playing a vital role in weed management, soil health, and crop protection. Unfortunately, while the APVMA have proposed to affirm the use of paraquat and diquat they are also proposing to significantly restrict the use of paraquat, which could have severe consequences for our farming practices and productivity.

Summary of Proposed changes:

  • Spray Seed to have a max rate of 800ml. Only registration is prior to crop establishment.
  • All Pre harvest registrations for Diquat to be removed
  • Maximum rate of 800ml/ha for Paraquat pre sowing
  • Maximum rate of 400ml/ha for Paraquat spray topping
  • No desiccation registration for Paraquat

The APVMA is currently seeking feedback from stakeholders like you. This is your chance to share your experience with paraquat and diquat and explain how the proposed changes will affect your farm, livelihood and ability as a primary producer.

Your voice matters. We encourage you to take the opportunity to provide feedback to the APVMA on how this decision will impact your business and farming operations. Public consultation is open until October 29, 2024.

We encourage you to visit the APVMA website to learn more about the proposed changes and submit your feedback: https://www.apvma.gov.au/news-and-publications/public-consultations/paraquat-and-diquat-proposed-regulatory-decisions

If you have any questions or need further information on this issue, please don’t hesitate to contact your local Crop Smart team.

Sincerely,

Matt Durden

CEO, Crop Smart
